DIY Project: How to make a colored Chalkboard

If you want to learn how to make a traditional chalkboard, check out the post “How to make a DIY chalkboard on any surface.”

Ready to make a chic chalkboard in any color you want? When I say any color, I mean ANY color. Does chalkboard paint come in every color under the sun? Nope. But it comes in CLEAR! Which means you can use it to coat your favorite acrylic paint color to create something uniquely yours. Let’s get started!

Here's what you'll need:

Acrylic Paint (I like using FolkArt, Americana and Martha Stewart acrylic paints)

Clear Chalkboard Paint

Sponge Brush

Sidewalk Chalk

Stand for Event Display (Optional)

Sawtooth Hook for Wall Display (Optional)

Newsprint and paper towels

Step by Step

HOW TO MAKE A COLORED CHALKBOARD

1.) Select a surface to turn into your chalkboard. Just like creating traditional chalkboards, you can use an old mirror, a piece of wood, a thrifted picture frame. You can also head to your local craft store for unpainted signs and shapes. Basically, any smooth surface that can take acrylic paint.

2.) Prep your surface by making sure it is clean and dry. Most surfaces can be clean with mild soap and water. Glass surfaces should be wiped clean using rubbing alcohol and a clean dry cloth. If you are using wood, sand it smooth and wipe with a damp cloth to remove any remaining dust.

3.) Paint your surface with the acrylic paint of your choice. For this project, I used FolkArt matte acrylic paint in Crushed Coral, Martha Stewart Satin acrylic paint in Wild Blueberry and Americana acrylic paint in Slate Grey. You may need two coats depending on your surface.

4.) Once the paint is dry, coat your surface with clear chalkboard paint according the the instructions on the back. If you are using this one by Americana, simply apply first in one direction (ie top to bottom) wait an hour and apply a second coat in the other direction (ie side to side). If you are using a wood surface, your paint strokes should be with the grain of the wood for the first coat and against for the second. I like to use a sponge brush when making chalkboards as I find they create a smoother end product than the streaky look created with the paint brush.

4.) Allow the chalkboard to cure for 24 hours.

5.) Condition the finished chalkboard with a light coating of chalk. This will help prevent streaks on your first use. Take a stick of sidewalk chalk and rub the side of it along the board, coating the entire surface. Wipe off excess chalk.

6.) You’re ready to design your very own chalkboard!

You might want to grab a stand here if you will be using the chalkboard for an event. When you’re ready to hang the chalkboard in its permanent home, you’ll want a hook like this on the back.

FYI… Skip the Chalk Markers

TIP: I only use sidewalk chalk on colored chalkboards. Reason being is that chalk markers can stain, or cause “ghosting”. This is easily fixed with another coat of chalkboard paint. Unless of course, your chalkboard paint is clear! To preserve your colored chalkboard, skip the chalk markers and use regular chalk.
