How to Write on Your Groom's Tie: A Special Wedding Message

I’m so excited to share this tutorial on how to write on a tie in collaboration with Dazi, a wedding tie shop full of ties and accessories to impress the whole bridal party. All opinions are my own.

How to Write on Your Groom's Tie

DIY Project: Hidden Tie Message

Psst! Pin this NOW and save for later!

If you’re a hopeless romantic like me, then you probably *love* Love Letters, too. Thoughtful sentiment can mean just as much as, if not more than, expensive gifts. My favorite anniversary gift from my husband was the little wooden box he gave me for out first anniversary. It was filled with love letters written on tea dyed paper.

I absolutely love the idea of passing notes to your future spouse on your wedding day. There are so many emotions that swirl around on your big day. One minute, you’re busy getting ready and in the next you’re cleaning off a chocolate covered flower girl and tracking down a late vendor. Even with a wedding planner, it can be dizzying at times. Having a letter from your partner can help you feel less overwhelmed and of course, really special.

Write notes to each other in the weeks leading up to the ceremony and when you see that special message on your wedding day, you’ll be so glad you did. You don’t have to write a long letter - you don’t even have to write your message on paper! In fact, there are lots of places where you can hide a thoughtful “I love you” note… like on the underside of his tie!

Here's how:

Step 1.

GATHER. There are a few different ways to write on fabric. Start with a light colored, natural fabric tie so your words will show and your message will last. I used the Onyx tie by Dazi. All of the ties made by Dazi are made of natural materials, so any of their light colored ties would be perfect for this project.

Then determine what type of fabric you have. If it's a heavy, woven fabric (like the tie shown here) then you can use fabric markers. If it's an absorbent or lightweight fabric like silk, markers will bleed in which case use a paintbrush and small amounts of paint or ink.

Step 2.

DESIGN. Lay your fabric on top of the newsprint to protect your surface. Write your message on paper first to get a feel for the layout. If you haven’t used fabric markers before, practice writing your message on a piece of scrap fabric.

For this project, I used a dark gray fabric marker. If you do not have a fabric marker, oil-based paint pens will work as well. Though paint pens tend to dry out quickly when writing on fabric. Note: the Spectrum Noir markers pictured here seem to have new packaging, so yours may look slightly different.

Note: The Spectrum Noir markers appear to have updated packaging, so your alcohol markers may look slightly different than the markers in the picture.

Step 3.

WRITE. Flip the tie to the reverse as you’ll be writing on the back of the tie. For size and placement reference, put the practice design right above where you’ll be writing on the tie. If possible fit the letters above and below the seam.

On this tie, I wrote “I will forever be your always” on one end of the tie and “I love you, xoxo Tiffany” on the other end.

Step 4.

IRON. Once completely dry, heat set the design with a dry heat on the highest setting the fabric will allow. I ironed this tie on high, circling the iron in small sections for about 30 seconds before moving on to the next section.

Step 5.

GIFT. Your groom is sure to be surprised when he picks up his tie and sees a sweet message from you. To say he’ll feel special is an understatement as he thinks about just how lucky he is that someone so thoughtful will soon be coming down the aisle to marry him.

Don’t forget to grab your alcohol fabric markers! This is the shade of grey I used.

By the way…

P.S. The traditional second year anniversary gift is cotton. If there was ever an occasion to hand letter a love note on your husband’s tie or wrap a non-cotton gift in fabric, it's your second anniversary!
